Kennedy Bay Golf Club

Kennedy Bay Golf Clubhouse

Kennedy Bay Golf Clubhouse

The Links, an established and reputable golf course located between Port Kennedy and the ocean, forms the hub of the new Kennedy Bay community, and The Links golf clubhouse and restaurant performs an important role as the first community facility in this new coastal township.

Our design concept was for the building to maintain a strong connection with the coastal landscape and climate, both through its form, and its use of materials. The Links sits comfortably within both the coastal scrub, and the cultivated landscape of the course, whilst maximizing climatic experiences of the coastal site.

The black-timber clad exterior of the building presents as a protective shell to the west, opening up to the north and east to address views and the course. The black volume cantilevers over a limestone coloured masonry base which is embedded into the landscape, carving out the approach to the building for golf carts in the undercroft below. Within the black shell are two honey coloured timber pods – restaurant to the north, and clubhouse to the south. Both are approached independently via ramps which link in a central light filled breezeway, the open approach to circulation encouraging patrons to engage with the landscape and environment.

Internal circulation has been consciously avoided in favour of these covered ways, encouraging engagement with the landscape and environment to traverse the building. This approach allows the building to function as one, whilst creating separate identities for The Links clubhouse, and Birdie Restaurant.

The project completed construction in September 2021.

As part of a larger rejuvenation to a 1980’s (sub)urban development the client was looking for an engaging design that captures the distinct sense of place epitomised by low coastal vegetation in a planar dry landscape.
