Dayton Sports Facilities
Gresley Abas was engaged by the City of Swan to design a 140,000 sqm master plan for a state-of-the-art sports complex, supporting the growing community of Dayton in the Swan Valley. Interconnected pavilions are strategically positioned around new floodlit fields and courts for hockey, AFL, cricket, soccer, tennis, basketball, and netball. This major development also includes a community center and youth center, enriching this new suburb with vital amenities.
The layout features team facilities, equipment storage, offices, and function spaces—each tailored to the needs of specific sports. Designed for both function and social connection, these blocks are oriented towards their respective fields and include generous covered spaces where players and spectators can gather and watch the games. Covered walkways and landscaped courtyards link each pavilion, creating a cohesive and welcoming environment.
In collaboration with the consulting team, Gresley Abas integrated several environmentally sustainable features into the design. After extensive coordination, the project pursued Green Star equivalency, reflecting a commitment to sustainability.
The complex's architectural highlight is an undulating roof inspired by origami, designed to collect rainwater and unify the individual building elements. This distinctive roof casts dappled light across the courtyards, with colorful soffits that create a striking visual feature as visitors move through the complex.
The Dayton complex was the winner of the West Australian Football Facility of the Year Award in 2024.
“The Dayton District Open Space is an outstanding example of how the right facilities can truly enhance a community. These modern, accessible football grounds will not only support the growth of our game but also serve as a hub for bringing people together.”
