Broome Recreation Centre
Gresley Abas were commissioned by the Shire of Broome in May 2023 to provide Lead Design services for the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre Redevelopment project (BRAC). Following an in-depth stakeholder engagement and consultation phase and brief confirmation process, key design outcomes were confirmed and design work commenced.
The design process has centred on providing a modern, integrated and functional sporting aquatic and recreation facility that encourages social interaction and participation in leisure fitness and sporting activities. Existing facilities were to be incorporated with the new design and expanded to grow the facility as a multi-use, functional and flexible hub. Schematic Design has been completed and work continues.
Key design features include:
high-quality design that responds to local cultural values and diversity to engender community pride and ownership.
encouragement of ease of movement, clear way-finding and sight-lines (to CPTED principles) and be suitable for use as an Emergency Welfare Centre
consideration of local climatic conditions, be environmentally sustainable and energy efficient. Material selection will be low maintenance and robust.
hub for community activity - centre to be welcoming and inclusive, bringing people of all ages, cultures, and abilities together, and providing an array of lifelong recreational opportunities for all members of the community.
focus on multi-use, functional, flexible spaces to future proof the facility, allowing for changes in participation and usage trends. Opportunities for retaining, refurbishing, or re-purposing existing amenities are incorporated.
