Designing a kitchen for our future chefs!

Faced with designing three separate but similarly briefed training/a la-carte kitchens, we decided to carry out a series of design workshops with a range of experts from each project team.

Collaborating with TAFE lecturers, private representatives from Registered Training Organisations and kitchen equipment specialists, we brought together disparate views on the layout and equipment of typical kitchens and developed a module through refinement and communication that become the model kitchen for all three projects.

Multi-functional benchtop spaces, demonstration areas, day-lighting control, best value mechanical exhaust and temperature control systems and best practice equipment and prefabricated workstations were all successfully integrated into the final design.

The project draws from the landscape and turns it inside out, bringing the unifying element of the ceiling to float above all of the functional spaces within, creating an elegant gateway to the public interface.

A landscaped kitchen garden has been fully integrated into the design and management of the facility to provide fresh produce and also provide an active marker to the future for the schools environmental policy framework.

The restaurant and learning spaces are linked to the outside landscape spaces, creating a fluid and open learning environment.
