AREH New Town
In 2019 Gresley Abas were invited by Marion Fredriksson Design to collaborate in the delivery of a Master Plan Framework for the development of a new township to support the Asian Renewable Energy Hub (AREH) project. The project is located in the Pilbara region, in the northwest of Western Australia approximately 220km east of Port Hedland and 270km southwest of Broome. It aims to generate up to 26,000 MW of wind and solar generation, and will be the largest renewable energy hub in the world.
The long life of the AREH project, coupled with a large workforce through the 10-year construction period and the 50+ operations period, provide the basis for the development of a new permanent town which may reach up to 10,000 people during construction, then around 8,000 people long term.
The vision for this town is to create a unique identity in the Pilbara, an identity that:
is nationally & internationally recognised
sets a new benchmark for sustainability and liveability
serves as a model for remote town development, and
has Nyangumarta people and culture embedded at every level
